The Au Pair Affair

Peter Dutton, while Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, granted tourist visas to four foreign au pairs who were denied entry at the border and detained, awaiting deportation. Apparently, this was against the advice of Border Force officials.

One au pair admitted to officials that she planned to work on a voluntary basis, minding children and cooking, for South Australian pastoralists Callum and Skye MacLachlan. In return she would get free accommodation. I believe this is not permitted on a tourist visa.

What’s this got to do with football? Callum MacLachlan – whose father Hugh has been a big donor to the Liberals – is related to AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan. Gillon McLachlan made representations to Dutton’s chief of staff to help get the au pairs through.
