Shit Happens and the Silent Interview

We all know that shit happens, but it’s always great when it happens to someone else, especially Tony Abbott.

It turns out that Abbott was on a visit to an army base in Afghanistan when he was discussing the death of some Australian soldiers. His response to these tragic deaths? “Shit Happens”.

But, despite the conversation being recorded on video (and only released after a long FoI request), Mr. Abbott said the comments were taken ‘out of context’.      He was interviewed by Mark Riley on Channel 7 and was asked to explain the context. He didn’t respond, i.e. he said nothing, i.e. he stood there in silence and just shook his head – for 28 seconds. It was wonderful, albeit painful, television (see video below).

That man went on to be elected PM of Australia. Go figure.
